Internal Sabbaticals

Just as with an external sabbatical, the main aim of an internal sabbatical is to give a staff member an undisturbed chance to think, write or generate new ideas in a new and inspiring environment that is separated from the normal pressures and obligations of their regular surroundings.

From one unit to another

An internal sabbatical, available for all PhD students and other academic staff, is a short-term exchange (1-2 weeks) from one unit within the department to another. Even though most of us know many staff members in other units, few of us have experienced them within research constellations. Nor do we normally have much clue of the main questions they are currently working on or of the intellectual ideas that drive them. Thus, another goal of the internal sabbatical is to promote interactions between researchers that would rarely normally meet, interactions that invariably lead to exciting new ideas – and new collaborations – at the boundaries of different fields. Whether the outcome is the production of a manuscript you never seem to have the time to write or the creation of exciting and unexpected research collaboration, a short internal sabbatical can be an incredibly inspiring and personally fulfilling experience.

Be the sabbatee of the month

Our goal is that at least one internal sabbatical occurs somewhere in the department each month. The person (or persons) on sabbatical will then become that month’s sabbatee(s) (like “April’s Sabbatee(s)”), and at the conclusion of the sabbatical, Inger Ekström or Anders Örtegren will interview the sabbatee(s) for the Biologibloggen to record their experiences.

Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in their yield; but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land, a Sabbath for the Lord. Leviticus 25: 3-4
