Relocation of Biology Buildings B, C, and D to the Ecology Building

Institutional densification
The department’s densification project will result in Sensory Biology and Biodiversity and Evolution operating on floor 3 of the Ecology Building, while Evolutionary Ecology and Infection Biology and Functional Ecology will have laboratories and offices on the second floor. Molecular Biosciences will remain in Biology Building A, while the microscopy platform will be the only activity remaining in Biology Building B.
Upcoming office relocations
This autumn’s office relocations will take place in two stages. In the first stage, on 30 September, Sensory Biology will move to the third floor of the Ecology Building. This means that everyone currently based in the Biology Building, as well as those with offices on the second floor of the Ecology Building, will move to their new offices.
All other office relocations that have not yet been implemented will take place on 26 October. This includes the remaining offices on the first floor of the Ekologihuset, as well as relocations within the same floor of the Ekologihuset.
From week 26 onwards, moving boxes will be available in room B234 in the Biology Building and in the basement near the goods entrance of the Ecology Building. Please contact Henrik Wendel or a member of the property team if you have any specific questions or require assistance.
Biology Building
The department has vacated large parts of Biology Buildings C and D, and we are now preparing to move operations from Building B to the third floor of the Ecology Building. Work on the offices will begin immediately after the summer for those wishing to move sooner; otherwise, the move is scheduled for 30 September. Laboratories are being built directly in the Ecology Building, and work on the specifications is due to be completed by summer 2026. After that, minor alterations will be implemented as soon as possible, while major refurbishments will be projects undertaken with LuBygg and will take longer.
Work is underway to build a new GU laboratory on floor 1 of the Ekologihuset to replace the existing one in Biology Building C, and it is expected to be ready for use by the spring term of 2027.
As the student lunchroom in the B Building is being closed, pressure will increase on the equivalent facility in the A Building. The plan is to convert the currently underused computer room on floor 2, next to the lecture hall, into a bookable seminar room which can also serve as an additional lunchroom (no kitchen facilities).
Ecology Building
In the Ecology Building, the relocations are underway to physically bring the divisions together. By the summer, the offices vacated by CEC will have been painted and will then be ready for occupancy. Work on building a P2 lab on floor 2 of the Ecology Building has begun and is expected to be completed by October 2026.
Vision
The goal is to create functional and well-utilised spaces where divisions are gathered in shared or individual offices, with common lunchrooms and functional laboratories open to all researchers, fostering a collaborative environment for research and education. The vision is not set in stone and may be adjusted over time.

General timeline
Autumn semester 2026
- Ongoing – renovation and refurbishment of laboratories in the Ecology Building
- Ongoing – construction of the P2 lab on Floor 2 of the Ecology Building

- Group rooms on the ground floor were converted into offices for staff from Biology Building C. HR and financial administrators have relocated from Biology Building B to free up additional office spaces.
- All offices have been moved from Biology Building C to B.

- Inventory of refrigerators and freezers in Biology Buildings B and C
Spring 2025
Identified potential replacement labs in the Ecology Building for those currently in Biology Building C. Some spaces are still to be found.
- Relocation of instrumental chemistry on the third floor
- Discussions about lab renovations to ensure they function as replacements for the labs being phased out (Sensory Biology)
- Awaiting the start of planning for the P2 lab
- Awaiting the start of planning for the construction of the cold storage room "Isbjörnen" in the basement of the Ecology Building
- Establishment of a room function program for undergraduate facilities in the D-corridor on the first floor of the Ecology Building
- Discussions about the allocation of storage spaces in the basement of the Ecology Building
- The planning of the P2 lab and the relocation of the Functional Ecology dishwashing room are to be completed in June
Autumn 2025
- Start of construction for the cold room “Isbjörnen” in the basement of the Ecology Building
- Completion of “Isbjörnen” and move-in of freezers
Spring 2026
- Relocation of lab on floor 3 to be converted into a histology lab, chemical and lab storage
- Clearing out the chemical storeroom on floor 3
- Relocation of the sterile/cell lab on floor 3
- Conversion of lab from extraction lab to pcr lab on floor 3
- Restructuring of the cold room on floor 3 to make space for Sensory Biology
- Moving of the lunch-room storage on floor 3
- Move of the pcr lab on floor 3
- Move of the gel room and the server on floor 3
- Move of the fly group on floor 3
