Financing of doctoral students

Postgraduate studies in biology are to run for a period of 48 months. A teaching component at the undergraduate level should be included in the Individual Study Plan (max 20%) and automatically leads to an extension of the doctoral scholarship for a period corresponding to the hours spent on teaching duties.

With the exception of doctoral students who are entirely externally financed (via graduate schools and such) or entirely internally financed (as a result of the department’s own special investments), the financing of doctoral students is to be assured according to the following model:

Years 1 and 2

The responsibility for financing the salary of the doctoral student rests with the Principal Supervisor.

Years 3 and 4 (and any extensions due to teaching duties or other circumstances)

The responsibility for financing the salary of the doctoral student rests with the Principal Supervisor’s unit.

The department is also to be given the opportunity to deviate from the model above in order to make strategic investments by fully financing a doctoral student’s salary in order to support a particular subject or a particular supervisor (like a newly appointed Senior Lecturer). A deviation from this model should also be possible if a doctoral student belongs to two different departments.

Running costs

As a requirement for admission of a new doctoral student, the Principal Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor is to provide evidence to the Director of Postgraduate Studies and the Head of the Unit that project funding is sufficient to cover the annual costs of the doctoral student’s research and other activities.

A written Financial Plan

At the time of admission, a Financial Plan is to be drawn up, establishing and ensuring the doctoral student’s salary and running costs. It can be included as a special attachment to the doctoral student’s Individual Study Plan.

An administrator will archive all documents relating to the postgraduate studies of doctoral students.
