Handling of lithium-ion batteries in the department's premises

Due to updated safety regulations from the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet), the university's insurance company, we have new procedures for how we handle lithium-ion batteries in our premises from 1 December 2023

The following applies to all of the department's premises:

  • You are allowed to charge and use lithium-ion batteries in mobile phones, tablets, and laptops, including your private ones.
  • You are allowed to charge and use other electrical equipment that you received/purchased through Lund University if the battery is under 10Ah.
  • You are NOT allowed to store, charge or bring in lithium-ion batteries from any type of electric transport (such as electric bicycles and electric scooters).

For lithium batteries larger than 10Ah that you need in your work, you must do a risk assessment and make sure that it is safe to use them. Contact facility manager Henrik Wendel (Henrik [dot] Wendel [at] biol [dot] lu [dot] se).

Contact the facilities group for disposal of used lithium-ion batteries.

In the event of a battery fire

It is important to act quickly if a battery catches fire.

  1. Rescue and warn people that there is a fire.
  2. Only attempt to extinguish the fire if you can do so without endangering yourself. Do not risk inhaling the gases produced when batteries burn or burn yourself on the battery. Go outside and close the door if there is heavy smoke.
  3. Call 112

Report the incident in the University's incident management system (IA system).
