What I work with

My PhD project will focus on the olfactory neuroecology of the Vinegar Fly, Drosophila melanogaster. In general, my question lies on how the olfactory system of vinegar flies fits their ecological needs. I will investigate layout and ecological function of distinct olfactory circuits in the fly by performing behavioural studies, neurophysiology and genetics.

More specifically, I will investigate:

  • Olfactory circuits mediating repellency towards harmful objects.
  • Olfactory circuits involved in detecting beneficial microbes.
  • Identification of natural odor ligands for Drosophila from its ancestral range.

My background

I got my Master on Agricultural Entomology in Tehran, Iran. In 2011, I moved to Sweden and joined the unit of Chemical Ecology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Alnarp. There, I studied the evolution of the olfactory system of drosophilids – especially D. suzukii – under the supervision of Associate Professor Teun Dekker.
