Oscar M. Rollano Penaloza

Postdoctoral fellow | PhD

I have started my PhD project in September 2014 as part of a collaboration between Lund University, Sweden and San Andrés University, Bolivia.

My main research is about the molecular interactions between quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) and the biocontrol agent Trichoderma spp.

The Trichoderma genus has shown to induce plant growth and increase the plant resistance to multiple pathogens in several ways. These interesting features make Trichoderma and its products, good candidates for improving agricultural practices and replacement of chemical pesticides. Nevertheless, the mechanisms are not completely understood and we are using different approaches to detail the interactions at a molecular level, focusing in gene expression through Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques.

In the second part of the project we are studying the downy mildew disease (caused by Peronospora variabilis) in quinoa plants on sterile co-cultures in Bolivia and trying to combat it with Trichoderma formulates. Here, the knowledge acquired at Lund University is implemented at San Andres University, contributing to a scientific technology transfer.

Techniques applied

  • Plant-Fungi sterile co-cultures
  • Transcriptomics / RNA-seq
  • Quantitative PCR
