Maria Strandh

Researcher | PhD

I received my PhD in 2008 at Lund University studying the genetic and transcriptomic basis of species-specific odour signals in insects (moths). From night flying insects I progressed by studying tubenosed seabirds (blue petrels) and the effect of variable immune genes (MHC) on mate choice during a postdoc at CNRS, Montpellier, France. Coming back to Lund University I dug into MHC diversity at both a structural and taxonomic level, followed by studying within-host pathogen interactions. During a postdoc at SLU, Alnarp, I focused on transcriptomic programs in female-male interactions during pollination in a plant. When returning to Lund University I studied genomics of mate compatibility and species differentiation in ostriches and I also designed assays for the ostrich microbiome project. Currently I study the evolutionary genomics and transcriptomics of the MHC region in passerine birds.

Main research interests

  • The molecular basis of speciation and specialization, what genes must change in order for speciation or specialization to occur? Genome evolution.
  • Co-regulatory gene networks, how do genomes work in terms of transcribed genes and how do gene networks evolve?
  • Gene-gene interactions within individuals, between males-females, hosts-pathogens. What is the basis for non-additive genetic effects and genetic incompatibility?

Scientific themes

  • Speciation; molecular differentiation
  • Generalism-specialism; genetic basis
  • Sexual selection; mate recognition and choice
  • Genetic compatibility/incompatibility
  • Co-evolution; interaction between genes/gene products

Methods and skills

  • Transcriptomics and genomics, molecular isolation and bioinformatics
  • Candidate gene and quantitative analyses; PCR, qPCR and cloning
  • Large-scale sequencing; WGS, RNASeq and amplicon sequencing
