What I work with
Currently I am working on characterization of odorant receptors from different species of bark beetles. In addition, I am also working on evolution of pheromone receptors in Lepidoptera. I am using the HEK (Human Embryonic Kidney) cell system for functional characterization of odorant receptors.
I was born in a small village of south India. I did my Bachelor in agriculture at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India. After that, I worked as a junior research fellow in “Technology and product development for upscaling pheromone for the control of Helicoverpa armigera and Leucinodes orbonalis” project under the supervision of Prof. Durairaj Chinnasamy at the Department of Agricultural Entomology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University for a year. In 2010, I moved to Sweden for my Master’s studies in biology, where I had the opportunity to study at various universities starting at Uppsala University and continued through SLU and Stockholm University. I completed my Master’s degree in Biology at Lund University 2012. I did my PhD studies at Lund university during 2013-17 which was focused on on evolution of pheromone receptors in lepidopteran insects, mostly primitive moths. I studied how the moth pheromone receptors evolved in correspondence to ever-changing female pheromones in three different insect species, Rhyacophila nubila, Eriocrania semipurpurella and Lampronia capitella.
Other activities: I am playing field hockey with Nayan Landhockey Club, Lund & Hockeyklubben Orient Lyngby, Copenhagen.
We use Human embryonic kidney cells 293 (HEK293) to functionally characterize the odorant receptors (ORs) from various organisms including moths, beetles and flies. We transfect the HEK293 cells with vectors expressing transcriptional repressor and our gene of interest, thereby we control the gene expression. Using fluorescent Ca2+-sensitive dye, we measure the ligand-induced OR activation with a fluorescent spectrophotometer.
