Admission of doctoral students

In general, we follow the Faculty of Science’s admission procedures.

The procedure is described in brief below.

If you are a new supervisor at the department, please contact the directors of studies before you start a doctoral student admission for a meeting and run-through of the procedure.

Admission procedure

The main principle for doctoral student maintenance is one of the University’s doctoral studentships, see description below.

Opportunities to admit a doctoral student who has been awarded an external scholarship have been considerably restricted due to regulations that came into force in 2018 further information is available on the Government Offices of Sweden website (in Swedish only)

If you are interested in, or would like to request, the admission of a scholarship-funded doctoral student, please contact one of the directors of studies for further information.

Step 1 – Notice of interest

A notice of interest is to be submitted to the department concerning the establishment of a doctoral studentship and admission of a doctoral student. The funding of the position and of the doctoral student’s support are to be stated. The notice is also to contain a brief project description to provide an idea of the thesis project’s nature. The notice of interest, Form 1, Notice of interest to supervise a doctoral student (pdf; 530 kB; in Swedish) is to be filled in and signed by the supervisor, unit manager and director of studies.

Step 2 – Vacancy notice text

When the director of studies has approved the notice of interest, Form 2 Vacancy notice for a doctoral studentship (pdf; 951 kB; in Swedish) is to be filled in. Further information on formulation of the vacancy notice text, in particular on needs analysis, is available in the pdf Advice on the recruitment of doctoral students (pdf; 445 kB; in Swedish).

When the director of studies has signed form 2, both form 1 (notice of interest) and 2 (vacancy notice text) are to be submitted to the HR administrator who takes the matter further, including submission for the head of department’s approval.

Step 3 – Call for applications for a doctoral studentship

The HR administrator draws up an announcement and publishes it in consultation with the supervisor. Further information on the recruitment process is available in the pdf Advice on the recruitment of doctoral students (pdf; 445 kB; in Swedish).

Step 4 – Selection – doctoral studentship

After the application period has expired, a selection procedure is conducted in accordance with specific guidelines in the pdf Advice on the recruitment of doctoral students (pdf; 445 kB; in Swedish). When the assessment and selection have been completed, fill in form 3, Assessment and selection (pdf; 947 kB; in Swedish). The aim of the assessment is to judge whether the candidate has the ability to benefit from research studies in biology. The basis for this assessment, in addition to examining the CV, includes work samples and an interview, see instructions: Advice on recruitment of doctoral students.

Please note: this form also constitutes the statement that will be sent to all applicants and is therefore to be in English.

A supervisory committee is to be set up in connection with the final selection. Contact one of the directors of studies in order to select a suitable examiner. Then fill in form 4 Supervisory committee (pdf; 946 kB; in Swedish) and form 5, the faculty’s form Application for admission to third-cycle education at the Faculty of Science (pdf; 73 kB).

Step 5 – Admission to research studies

Submit the forms mentioned above to the HR administrator who will take the matter further, including submission for approval by the head of department.

When all the documents are checked and ready, the HR administrator writes an appointment decision for the doctoral student.

The research administrator at the department files all documents relating to a doctoral student’s research studies.
