Electron microscope

The Department of Biology has two electron microscopes.

Our Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) is a 120 kV JEOL 1400 plus, with a bottom mounted CMOS camera. We can perform unlimited image montage, tomography and light/electron microscopical correlative studies. In the TEM usually thin sections (50-70 nm) of biological tissue or particle and material specimens (bacteria, viruses, powders etc) are studied. If the sample allows sub-nanometer resolution is achievable with this technique.

With our Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Hitachi SU3500, it is possible to perform both high and low vacuum studies. All types of exposed surfaces of dry specimens can be studied: metal-coated samples in high vacuum, and uncoated in low vacuum. Typical samples are bacteria, pollen, tissue preparations, insects and different materials. A resolution of a few nanometers is possible to achieve, but is highly dependent on the sample. On the other hand the low magnification offers overview and a surprising depth of focus.

The equipment is available for all researchers within the Department of Biology, and also for researchers from both within and outside Lund University.
