BECC Grand Seminar: Biodiversity Governance and Climate Change

governance
Seminar
This seminar will explore climate-related challenges to landscape governance practices. It will consider the robustness of existing governance institutions, and propose a deliberative approach for (and a research project relating to) future biodiversity governance

Please register here before June 12th

Biodiversity and land use governance currently reflects an expectation that relatively stable ecological conditions typical of the Holocene will continue into the future. In many places, it relies on landscapes fragmented into static utilisation zones - with biodiversity preservation largely confined to public land. This spatial segregation has helped diminish conflicts over competing uses of those landscapes’ features and resources.
However, as climate impacts intensify, tensions will re-emerge as existing and also new actors – for instance, relating to ‘negative emissions’ - press to control ecologically destabilised landscapes and resources. Limiting conflict will require anticipatory, pre-emptive action.
