Science & Society

Course description

The course is open for all PhD students at the Department of Biology. It is mandatory for those who took Part I of the Introductory course earlier this year.

The aims

To foster the understanding of the role of science in society, its funding and its mandate, its responsibilities and limits. To critically examine concepts such as academic freedom, the alleged tension between applied and pure science, the products of science, scientism and scientific advocacy.

Course organization

The course amounts to two full days (excluding time for reading).


The course is typically given once a year, sometime in November/December
