The aim of the course is that the student after completing the course should have acquired knowledge, skills and abilities regarding both pathogenic microorganisms and the immune system's function at the molecular and cellular level. The student shall also understand host-pathogen interactions and infection processes from both a mechanistic and an evolutionary perspective. During the course, students practice analyzing and discussing scientific material with an immunological and infectious biology focus.

The course consists of three modules: a theoretical part that comprises 7.5 credits, a seminar part that comprises 6 credits and exercises with computer-based laboratory work that comprises 1.5 credits. The course deals with pathogenic microorganisms, the function of the immune system, host pathogenic interactions and the course of infection from a mechanistic and an evolutionary perspective. The following subjects are treated:

  • Congenital and adaptive immunity
  • Inflammation
  • Medical microbiology
  • Epidemiology and evolution
  • "Systems immunology"
  • Vaccine and treatment
  • Infection control and global health.
