Digital image processing in dim light

A forest at night, the confines of a cave or the depths of the ocean are home to an enormous variety of animals, and despite the scarcity of light, most of them use their eyes in the daily struggle to survive. Millions of years of evolution have fine-tuned both the optics and neural processing of eyes so that the maximum amount of information can be extracted from dim images.

We have now uncovered many of these specialisations, especially at the neural level, and it is these - the solutions found by Nature herself - that can be directly applied to the creation of a new generation of clever digital cameras with improved performance in dim light. Using these visual principals as inspiration, we recently developed image-processing algorithms that dramatically enhance the reliability of noisy image sequences collected in dim light. This project, funded by the car maker Toyota, was a collaboration with mathematicians Henrik Malm and Magnus Oskarsson.
