Why study immunology?
The immune system plays a crucial role in our life defending us from invading microorganisms that might give rise to disease. In addition, the immune system also provides protection against some tumours. On the other hand malfunction of the immune system might result in disease, such as allergies and autoimmune disorders. The importance of a functioning immune system is sadly but well shown in people with loss of it (e.g., after infection with the human immunodeficiency virus - HIV), which may succumb from even common infections that normal people can easily cope with.
The course in immunology deals with how the body defends itself against invading microorganisms and how this is related to health and disease.
Who should take the course?
The aim is to give an in-depth knowledge in immunology and training in the methods used in the field. In fact, immunological methods have a broad usability within many disciplines in biomedicine, innate and acquired immunity, especially the use of antibodies as diagnostic reagents. This course will be valuable for all biological students, in particular for those with interest in biomedical field and for those with interest in clinical disorders related to the immune system. The course is optional in a Master's degree in Science with a major in Biology or in Molecular Biology and is a valuable basis for further postgraduate studies or a profession within immunology or biomedicine.
Training in methods used in immunology and general laboratory skills is an important part of the course. This includes practicals for identification, quantification and localization of molecules and cells by the use of immunological methods.
The theoretical parts are treated both in lectures given within the different fields immunology and in problem-solving seminars. The first part of the course will give the basic knowledge of the organs, cells and molecules of the immune system. Then the integration of the immune system at the organism level and its interplay with the microorganisms will be dealt with. The maturation (ontogeny) of our immunity and the phylogenetic development of the immune defence in different animals will be brought up. Finally, you will learn about the pathophysiological aspects of immunology and its clinical relevance in immune diseases such as allergy and autoimmunity.
As part of the training there is a literature task that is performed as a group work. The groups should extract up-to-date information about an interesting immunologic theme and then present the results in the form of a written report as well as a brief oral presentation.
A written exam is given at the end of the course. In addition, the requirements include laboratory reports, attendance at seminars and a literature project presented both in written and oral form.
Where do you go after this?
Suitable courses for further studies within the field is Cellular and Molecular Immunology (BIOR40) and in related areas are, e.g., Pharmacology, Toxicology and courses within the Biomedicine programs. Of course a Degree project within this area and future work or research could be within e.g. Physiology or Medical Biology.
